Recently my sister got married. Before this, I never saw any Indian marriage with such an interest. But her marriage was something that raised many questions in my mind. She had this typical Hindu wedding full of customs and rituals.
Talking about these rituals, each ritual has its own importance. These customs and rituals forms the foundation of Hindu community. Though these practices are quite old aged but still followed by even many open minded person with extreme faith.
In this article I will talk about the most important ritual of every Hindu marriage which is Sindoor Dana. In this custom, the groom puts Sindoor in the bride’s hair partition. This symbolically represents that a girl is married now.
In some communities it is seen that the groom’s mother doing this part to welcome the new bride in their family. You might have heard that Sindoor is applied for the long life of the husband. But what you might not know the actual science that is involved in this ritual. So, let me tell you more about this custom.
Cultural Belief
In our modern society people look at Sindoor as a demarcation between married and unmarried women. But, this is not the case. This is an old age practice and is much deep-rooted. It's been more than 5000 years people performing this custom. Its existence can be tracked down to Harappan excavations. Sindoor also has a special mention in the Puranas, Soundarya Lahharis, and Lalitha Sahasranamam.
So the cultural belief of applying Sindoor goes like this. Red colour signifies power. According to the traditional Hindu mythology, a woman has to adorn Sindoor till her husband is alive. Even Goddess Sita (Wife of Lord Rama) and Parvati (Wife of Lord Shiva), used to apply Sindoor between their hair partition. Hence, it is believed that Goddess Paravati protects the husband of all the married women who apply Sindoor as well as sways off any kind of lurking evil. So, by applying Sindoor, the wife indirectly protects and prays for her husband’s long and healthy life.
Note: For better results you should apply sindoor right up to your pituitary gland where all our feelings are centered.
It is also believed that applying red vermilion powder activates the chakras in the forehead. This helps in attracting pranic and cosmic energy. Hence, indirectly this ritual bestows the couple with good health and prosperity.
I hope now you know why the elderly women in our Hindu families put emphasis on applying sindoor. From the day a woman gets married, this vermilion colour becomes a part of her entity.
